. . . Path to Impact

Prior to launching the Deaf Film Academy, Michael founded Front Row Films, establishing it as a consulting organization dedicated to developing accessible film programs for Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing communities worldwide. Through Front Row Films, he offers low-cost online classes and consulting services that remove barriers to filmmaking, with full accessibility including international sign language and voice interpretation, serving individuals and organizations who are Deaf, hard of hearing, hearing, or connected to Deaf communities.

Michael first ventured into the world of international film festivals as a two-time Judge for the world's largest Deaf creative arts festival, the prestigious Clin d'Oeil in Reims, France.  He then became their Film Festival Manager in 2022 and 2024 and looks forward to continuing in that role.  He is also the Creative Director for the SignLight International Film Festival and serves as a Judge for the Della Award Film Festival in Germany. Beginning in 2025, Michael and Douglas Ridloff were co-founders and co-directors of Slam Row Film Festival, the first international Deaf film festival in New York City.

Michael Kaufer has been involved in film and media education for over a decade, with a long-standing commitment to accessibility and Deaf storytelling. From 2015 to 2021, he served as Director of the trailblazing Deaf Film Camp at Camp Mark 7, where he trained Deaf and hard-of-hearing youth ages 13–17 in the fundamental aspects of filmmaking—from concept development through production and editing. Through extensive fundraising efforts, Michael helped provide film training to more than 600 campers, many of whom have gone on to apply their skills across a range of colleges and universities, and into diverse careers, including the entertainment industry.

. . . from meditator to webinar host . . .

Michael is a skilled mediator and facilitator who leads a variety of virtual workshops and webinars designed to highlight and strengthen the skills and abilities of Deaf guests. Through inclusive and accessible online sessions, he creates a supportive space where participants can share expertise, collaborate, and learn from one another.  His approach centers on empowerment, clear communication, and ensuring Deaf voices, talents, and perspectives are fully recognized and valued.

Upon his retirement, he transitioned into working for Apple. He currently enjoys his "day job" as People Operations Planner for Apple's Upper West Side store.
